I think there was a film by Oscar Roehler five years ago or so that was also around three hours long, one that was even longer by Reitz, but these are the only ones coming to mind. It is a fairly long film yep, actually unusually long for a German movie these days if we don't count miniseries. I still enjoyed the watch for the most part and these three hours flew by relatively quickly. But this doesn't mean it is a bad film or anything. It's all weaker than "The Lives of Others" here, the lead performance, the script, the direction, the emotional impact etc. Was this one worth the wait? Probably not. After a not particularly successful journey to Hollywood (Depp/Jolie), it took almost a decade for him to make another movie. He is of course still most known for the Oscar-winning "Lives of Others", but this one we got here is only his second film after the latter, which really isn't much. "Werk ohne Autor" or "Never Look Away" is a new German 2018 movie and the most recent filmmaking effort by writer and director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck.
